Nike released the original Nike Dunk basketball shoe in 1985.
The Dunk was created for college basketball and originally appeared in school-inspired colorways. Its design combined visual elements associated with earlier Nike basketball models, including the Terminator and Air Jordan 1. The matching colors helped fans identify college teams and gave the shoe a strong connection to campus sports culture.
Although the Dunk began as a basketball shoe, it later became particularly important in skateboarding and streetwear. Nike SB introduced a skateboarding version in 2002, adding features such as a padded tongue and Zoom Air cushioning. Limited collaborations and unusual materials helped make the SB Dunk a major collectible sneaker.
The Dunk is often confused with the Air Jordan 1 because both debuted in 1985 and share similar high-top proportions and color blocking. They are separate Nike-related models with different branding and histories. The Dunk’s original purpose was college basketball, not specifically Michael Jordan’s professional career.
