McDonald’s replaced Speedee with the Golden Arches as its primary mascot symbol in 1962.
The change reflected McDonald’s shift from a small restaurant operation to a recognizable national chain. The arches had already appeared in the architecture of McDonald’s restaurants, but the company increasingly treated them as a central visual identifier.
In 1962, the arches were combined into the familiar stylized “M” logo. This helped create a symbol that could identify a restaurant even when the full McDonald’s name was not displayed prominently.
The date is sometimes confused with 1968, when another important version of the logo appeared. The arches themselves, however, became the company’s principal symbol in 1962, replacing the earlier Speedee character in that role.
