McDonald’s opened its first McCafé in 1993.
The first McCafé opened in Melbourne, Australia, as a coffeehouse-style extension of the McDonald’s brand. It gave the company a dedicated identity for espresso-based drinks and café-style service while remaining connected to the restaurant network.
The concept helped McDonald’s compete more directly in markets where café culture and barista-made coffee were important parts of everyday life. McCafé later expanded internationally, with menus and store designs adapted to local markets.
The first McCafé should not be confused with the later arrival of McCafé products in particular countries. The 1993 Melbourne opening marks the origin of the branded café concept, while its rollout across other markets happened over subsequent years.
