McDonald's opened its first McCafé in 1993.
The first McCafé opened in Melbourne, Australia, as a coffee-focused extension of the McDonald's restaurant brand. It gave the company a way to compete more directly in café culture while using existing restaurant locations and the familiarity of the McDonald's name.
The concept expanded internationally and developed its own visual presentation, menu emphasis, and café-style atmosphere. McCafé later became especially important as McDonald's sought to broaden its appeal beyond traditional burgers, fries, and soft drinks.
The first McCafé was not opened in the United States. That distinction is a frequent source of confusion because the sub-brand later became highly visible in American and European restaurants. The 1993 date refers to the original Melbourne launch.
