McDonald’s opened Hamburger University in 1961 as its management training center.
The institution was established at the company’s Oak Brook, Illinois, headquarters area. It trained restaurant managers, owner-operators, and corporate staff in McDonald’s operating standards, including food preparation, service, restaurant procedures, and management. The name was deliberately memorable branding, using “hamburger” in the style of an academic institution.
Hamburger University was not a conventional college granting general academic degrees. Its purpose was professional training and the consistent transfer of McDonald’s methods throughout the expanding franchise system. That consistency supported the company’s broader brand promise across restaurants.
The university later expanded its international reach and developed training facilities in other countries. Its original 1961 opening is therefore a major milestone in McDonald’s internal branding and franchise education, not simply a reference to a menu item.
