McDonald’s launched the McDonaldland advertising universe in 1971.
McDonaldland presented McDonald’s as a fantasy setting populated by characters such as Ronald McDonald, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and the Hamburglar. The campaign gave the company a shared fictional world for television commercials, print promotions, restaurant displays, and toys.
The launch was part of McDonald’s family-oriented branding strategy. Instead of relying only on the restaurant name or individual food products, the company used recurring personalities and stories to make visits feel like part of an imaginative experience. Ronald McDonald had already appeared in advertising, but McDonaldland expanded the concept into a larger setting.
The campaign is sometimes dated to the introduction of a particular character, but 1971 refers to the launch of the broader McDonaldland world. Its characters later changed in appearance and prominence as McDonald’s advertising style evolved.
