McDonald’s introduced the Speedee Service System in 1948.
Richard and Maurice McDonald redesigned their San Bernardino restaurant after operating it as a drive-in barbecue restaurant. The 1948 system reduced the menu, eliminated carhop service, standardized preparation, and organized the kitchen for rapid production.
The name “Speedee” and the image of a smiling chef communicated the restaurant’s promise of quick, consistent service. This was a foundational branding idea: the business was not merely selling hamburgers, but a recognizable service system built around speed and uniformity.
The 1948 date is sometimes confused with 1940, when the brothers opened their first restaurant, or 1955, when Ray Kroc opened the Des Plaines restaurant that became an important company showcase. The Speedee system itself belongs to the brothers’ 1948 redesign.
