McDonald’s introduced the Speedee mascot in 1948.
Speedee was a chef-like character used to represent the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System. Richard and Maurice McDonald reorganized their restaurant in San Bernardino, California, around a faster, simplified service model in 1948. The mascot’s name reflected the restaurant’s emphasis on speed.
Speedee appeared in early McDonald’s signs and advertising before Ronald McDonald became the company’s better-known character. The figure is sometimes confused with the later McDonald’s characters, especially Ronald McDonald and the Hamburglar, but Speedee belongs to the company’s earliest branding period.
The mascot also reflects a major change in restaurant identity. The McDonald brothers promoted standardized preparation, limited menus, and quick counter service, helping establish the fast-food model that McDonald’s franchises later spread worldwide.
