In what year did McDonald's introduce the Speedee character as its first mascot?

The story behind the answer

McDonald's introduced the Speedee character as its first mascot in 1948.

Speedee was a chef-like figure whose name referred to the restaurant's emphasis on speed. The character appeared in early McDonald's branding during the period when the company was promoting its quick-service system. This was before Ronald McDonald became the chain's best-known mascot.

The mascot connected the brand to the Speedee Service System developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald. Their San Bernardino restaurant reorganized food preparation around a limited menu, standardized production, and rapid service. Speedee therefore represented an operational promise as well as a visual identity.

Ronald McDonald gradually replaced Speedee in the public imagination after his introduction in the 1960s. Speedee still matters historically because he shows that McDonald's early branding focused on efficiency and hamburgers, rather than the family-oriented character world that came later.
