McDonald’s introduced the Arch Deluxe as a premium hamburger brand in 1996.
The Arch Deluxe was designed to move McDonald’s beyond its traditional youth-focused image and appeal more directly to adults. Its advertising emphasized a more sophisticated burger experience, including a specialized bun and mustard-mayonnaise sauce. The product became one of the company’s most prominent attempts to reposition part of its menu.
McDonald’s supported the launch with a large national advertising campaign, making the Arch Deluxe an important example of product branding rather than merely a menu addition. Despite the promotion, sales did not meet the company’s expectations, and the burger was eventually discontinued.
The name is sometimes confused with the Big Mac because both use “Mac”-style brand language and the McDonald’s arches. The Arch Deluxe was a separate product introduced in the mid-1990s.
