McDonald’s introduced its first national advertising slogan, “You Deserve a Break Today,” in 1971.
The campaign presented McDonald’s as a convenient and welcome pause in a busy day. Its wording connected the practical appeal of fast service with an emotional promise: customers could treat themselves to a break rather than simply buy a meal.
The slogan became one of the company’s most recognizable advertising lines and was supported by a widely remembered jingle. It helped demonstrate how McDonald’s branding could sell an atmosphere and routine, not just hamburgers, fries, and drinks.
McDonald’s used many later slogans, including “I’m Lovin’ It,” but those belong to different advertising eras. “You Deserve a Break Today” should not be confused with the company’s earlier local promotions or with the “You, You’re the One” campaign associated with a later period.
