McDonald’s began using the slogan “You Deserve a Break Today” in 1971.
The slogan positioned a McDonald’s visit as a welcome pause in a busy day. Rather than naming only a menu item, it connected the restaurant with a broader emotional promise: convenience, relief, and a small personal reward.
The campaign became one of the company’s best-known advertising efforts and helped establish the idea that McDonald’s slogans could become part of everyday speech. Its wording also reflected the growing importance of national television advertising in building a consistent identity across thousands of restaurants.
This slogan is sometimes confused with later break-related McDonald’s lines, including “Have you had your break today?” The two phrases are related in theme but are not the same slogan. The 1971 campaign’s canonical wording was “You Deserve a Break Today.”
