Ford Dagenham began automobile production in England in 1931.
The Ford Dagenham plant was built beside the River Thames in Essex, east of London. Construction began in the late 1920s, and the complex started producing vehicles in 1931. It became one of Ford’s most important European manufacturing sites.
Dagenham was designed as a large integrated factory, with facilities for activities including vehicle assembly and engine production. Its location provided access to river transport and helped Ford expand its British manufacturing capacity.
The plant is sometimes confused with Ford’s earlier Trafford Park operation in Manchester, which assembled vehicles before Dagenham opened. Dagenham’s later history included major engine production, even as vehicle assembly at the site eventually ended.
