Christian Dior presented his first couture collection on 12 February 1947 at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. The collection was officially organized around two lines, Corolle and En Huit, but it became famous under the name “New Look” after Carmel Snow, editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar, praised the designs after the show.

The style rejected much of the boxy, fabric-conserving clothing associated with the wartime years. Dior emphasized a rounded shoulder, a sharply defined waist, a fuller bust, and a long, sweeping skirt. The silhouette used substantial fabric and structured underpinnings, creating a dramatic contrast with the austerity and rationing that had shaped fashion during World War II.

The date is sometimes confused with 1946, when Dior established his fashion house, or with 1948, when the label expanded internationally. Those are important dates in Dior’s business history, but the New Look itself was unveiled in 1947. Its success helped restore Paris to the center of international haute couture.
