In what year did Dennis Anderson build the original Grave Digger?

The story behind the answer

Dennis Anderson built the original Grave Digger in 1982. He first created it as a mud-racing truck from salvaged parts, years before Grave Digger became a flagship name in Monster Jam.

The original vehicle used the body of a red 1952 Ford pickup and carried the rough, improvised character of Anderson’s early builds. The name came from his retort to people who mocked the truck’s junkyard parts: he said he would take the old junk and “dig you a grave.” The phrase became the truck’s identity.

At a local event, a scheduled monster truck failed to appear. Anderson offered his mud truck, already fitted with large tractor tires, to crush cars instead. The crowd response helped move him from mud bogging toward monster-truck shows. In 1984, he rebuilt the machine as a more conventional monster truck using a Ford panel-van body.

The famous black graveyard paint scheme arrived in 1986, so it did not belong to the very first version. That distinction explains why photographs of the original truck can look very different from the Grave Digger recognized today.
