C.S. Lewis published The Last Battle, the final book of The Chronicles of Narnia, in 1956.
The novel was issued by The Bodley Head in the United Kingdom and by Macmillan in the United States. It presents the end of Narnia’s history and follows King Tirian during a crisis involving deception, political manipulation, and a false Aslan.
The Last Battle won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, one of the major British awards for children’s literature. Pauline Baynes illustrated the book, as she did the other Narnia volumes. Lewis completed the series over a period of several years, beginning with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950.
The title can cause confusion because it is the final published volume but not the final chronological event in a broader sense: the series’ internal history includes the transition from old Narnia into a new reality. Publication dates also differ from the order in which many readers choose to read the books.
