In what year did C.S. Lewis die at his home in Oxfordshire?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis died in 1963 at his home in Oxfordshire.

Lewis died on 22 November 1963, at The Kilns near Oxford. He was 64 years old. The date coincided with the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy and the death of writer Aldous Huxley, so Lewis’s death received less immediate public attention than it otherwise might have.

The Kilns had been Lewis’s home for many years. He had lived there with his brother Warren Lewis and, later, with Joy Davidman. Lewis’s health had declined after a serious illness in 1951, although he continued writing and teaching for much of the remaining period.

Lewis was buried in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, Oxford. His gravestone bears a line from Shakespeare’s King Lear: “Men must endure their going hence.” His death occurred three years after Davidman’s and several years before many of his works became major films.
