In what year did C.S. Lewis become a Christian after a major personal conversion?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis became a Christian in 1931 after a major personal conversion. His return to Christianity followed years as an atheist and developed through conversations with fellow writers and thinkers.

Lewis later described his conversion as a movement from atheism to belief in God and then to Christianity. His discussions with J.R.R. Tolkien and Hugo Dyson were especially important in 1931, although Lewis’s intellectual and spiritual development had been unfolding for years before that meeting.

The year 1931 is sometimes confused with 1929, when Lewis said he surrendered his belief that God did not exist, or with 1930, another stage in his religious development. Lewis’s own accounts distinguish these stages. His conversion became the foundation for later works including The Problem of Pain, Mere Christianity, and The Screwtape Letters.
