In what year did Boeing deliver the 1,000th Boeing 747?

The story behind the answer

Boeing delivered its 1,000th Boeing 747 in 1993.

The milestone demonstrated the aircraft’s remarkable commercial success more than two decades after the type entered service. Boeing reached the landmark with a 747-400, the major upgraded version that introduced a modernized cockpit, improved engines, and extended range compared with earlier 747 models.

The 747 had originally been developed for high-volume international travel. Although the rise of efficient twin-engine wide-body jets later reduced demand for very large four-engine aircraft, the 747 remained important for passenger, cargo, and special-purpose operations.

The 1,000th-aircraft milestone is sometimes confused with the total production record. Boeing eventually built more than 1,500 747s. Production ended in 2023, when the final aircraft was delivered to Atlas Air. The 747’s production run therefore extended from the late 1960s into the era of modern composite and twin-engine airliners.
