Balenciaga opened a boutique in Madrid in 1933.
The Madrid branch marked an important expansion for Cristóbal Balenciaga’s Spanish business. After establishing his first major fashion operation in San Sebastián, he extended the Eisa Costura network to Madrid in 1933 and later opened a Barcelona branch in 1935. Madrid gave him access to Spain’s political, aristocratic, and cultural center, as well as clients who valued highly finished custom clothing.
The city also mattered creatively. Balenciaga frequently visited the Prado Museum, whose paintings of Spanish royalty and court dress influenced his use of dramatic silhouettes, capes, rich fabrics, and historical references. Those influences later appeared in designs such as his Infanta-inspired work.
A common confusion is with 1937, when Balenciaga opened his Paris couture house on Avenue George V. That was a separate international milestone. The Madrid boutique came earlier, in 1933, while his Spanish network was still expanding.
