Albert Einstein married Mileva Marić in 1903. They wed in Bern, Switzerland, on 6 January, after meeting as students at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich.
Marić was the only woman in Einstein’s physics-and-mathematics study group and became both his intellectual companion and romantic partner. Before their marriage, they had a daughter, Lieserl, born in 1902; her later fate remains uncertain. Their first son, Hans Albert, was born in 1904, followed by Eduard in 1910.
The marriage later deteriorated. The couple separated permanently in 1914 after Einstein moved to Berlin and Marić returned to Zurich with their sons. They divorced in 1919, and Einstein married Elsa Löwenthal that same year. A common mix-up is confusing the 1903 marriage with the 1919 divorce or with Einstein’s second marriage.
