In what Wisconsin town was American painter Georgia O'Keeffe born in 1887?
Answer
Sun Prairie
Answer
Sun Prairie
Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1887.
She was born Georgia Totto O'Keeffe on November 15, 1887, on a farm near Sun Prairie. Her parents, Francis Calyxtus O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe, had seven children, and Georgia was the second child. The rural Wisconsin setting was an early part of her life before her artistic career took her to Chicago, New York, Texas, and New Mexico.
Sun Prairie is near Madison, Wisconsin, which sometimes causes confusion because Madison is the better-known nearby city. O'Keeffe did not, however, give Madison as her birthplace. Her childhood in Wisconsin preceded formal art study and her later development as one of the most prominent American modernists.
O'Keeffe's birthplace is commemorated by the O'Keeffe family home site and local historical references. She died nearly a century later, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1986.
