At which New York institution did Georgia O'Keeffe study art in 1907?
Answer
Art Students League
Answer
Art Students League
Georgia O'Keeffe studied art at the Art Students League in New York in 1907. The independent art school was founded in 1875 and became known for offering serious instruction outside the restrictions of traditional academy systems.
At the League, O'Keeffe studied under William Merritt Chase, a prominent American painter and teacher. She won a scholarship for a still-life painting during her studies, showing her early proficiency in conventional studio methods. Her work at this stage was more representational than the abstractions that later made her famous.
O'Keeffe had previously attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, beginning in 1905. The two institutions are therefore both part of her education, but they are not interchangeable. Her later shift toward abstraction was influenced especially by Arthur Wesley Dow's ideas about design, which she encountered after her formal student years.
