In what U.S. state is "Breaking Bad" set?

“Breaking Bad” is set in the U.S. state of New Mexico. Most of the story takes place in and around Albuquerque, where chemistry teacher Walter White begins producing methamphetamine after receiving a lung-cancer diagnosis.

The setting is central to the series’ identity. Albuquerque’s high-desert landscape, Sandia Mountains, wide skies, and isolated roads create the visual world of Walter and Jesse Pinkman’s criminal enterprise. The show was also filmed primarily in New Mexico, making many locations recognizable to fans.

A common mix-up is confusing the state with Mexico, the neighboring country. Although the series includes Mexican characters and storylines, much of its action remains in New Mexico. The original script was reportedly set in Riverside, California, but the story was moved to Albuquerque after New Mexico offered attractive production incentives and the landscape became part of the show’s design.

New Mexico also became strongly associated with the wider franchise through “Better Call Saul” and “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.”
