In what state is the town of Punxsutawney located?
Answer
Pennsylvania
Answer
Pennsylvania
Punxsutawney is located in Pennsylvania, specifically in southern Jefferson County. The borough sits in western Pennsylvania, roughly 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, and is widely known as the home of the annual Groundhog Day celebration.
The town was incorporated as a borough in 1850, although settlement in the area began earlier. Its name comes from a Lenape term often translated as “town of the mosquitoes” or “town of the sandflies,” reflecting the region’s early insect-filled wetlands.
Punxsutawney’s fame comes from Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog associated with the February 2 weather-prognostication ceremony. Phil actually lives in nearby Young Township, but the celebration is identified with Punxsutawney. A common mix-up comes from the 1993 movie Groundhog Day: although the story is set in Punxsutawney, most exterior filming took place in Woodstock, Illinois.
