In Yevgeny Zamyatin’s ‘We’, the totalitarian state is called the OneState.
The OneState is a highly regimented society founded after the Two Hundred Years’ War. Its citizens live in transparent glass buildings, follow a mathematically organized timetable, and are identified by combinations of letters and numbers rather than ordinary personal names. The state claims that complete rationality and conformity have eliminated unhappiness.
The society is ruled by the Benefactor and policed by the Bureau of Guardians. D-503, the novel’s protagonist, is a spacecraft engineer building the INTEGRAL. His attraction to the rebellious I-330 exposes him to forbidden emotions, imagination, and the world beyond the Green Wall.
The name varies slightly by English translation. Some editions use “One State” or “The One State,” while others use “OneState.” These forms translate the Russian Yedinoye Gosudarstvo, so “OneState” is the canonical answer in the stored wording. Panem, Gilead, and Oceania belong to other dystopian works.
