In 'Total Recall' (1990), the company that offers false memory implants is Rekall.
Douglas Quaid visits Rekall because he wants the experience of an exciting vacation without actually traveling. He selects a fantasy involving Mars and a secret-agent identity, but the procedure becomes complicated when technicians discover that his apparent ordinary life may already involve suppressed or altered memories. The company markets implanted experiences as realistic adventures, making memory itself a commercial product.
Rekall is central to the film's biggest uncertainty: are Quaid's subsequent adventures real, or are they an elaborate fantasy created during the procedure? The story deliberately keeps that question alive, even as Quaid battles agents, meets the resistance, and helps transform Mars. The name comes from Philip K. Dick's 1966 story 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale', the source material for the film. Dreamscape and Inception are unrelated fictional names, while NuMemory is not the company's name in the 1990 film.
