In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship of the Ring has nine members.
The group consists of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf. They are chosen at the Council of Elrond to help carry the One Ring toward Mordor.
The Fellowship’s number is deliberately linked to the nine Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths who serve Sauron. The company is not a permanent military unit: its members have different roles, backgrounds, and motives, and the group eventually breaks apart after the events at Amon Hen.
A common mix-up is counting only the companions who leave Rivendell, excluding Gandalf, or counting the wider group of allies met later. The canonical Fellowship itself contains nine members at its formation.
