In The Untouchables, which actor won an Oscar for playing Jim Malone?

The story behind the answer

Sean Connery won an Oscar for playing Jim Malone in The Untouchables.

Malone is a veteran Chicago police officer who helps Treasury agent Eliot Ness assemble a team to fight Al Capone’s illegal liquor operation during Prohibition. Connery’s character provides experience, local knowledge and a strong moral presence within the group.

The 1987 film was directed by Brian De Palma and stars Kevin Costner as Ness, Robert De Niro as Capone and Andy Garcia as George Stone. Connery won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the only Oscar of his career.

The film was inspired by Ness’s memoir, but it takes substantial dramatic liberties with historical events. In real life, Ness and his federal team worked against Capone’s organization, while several scenes and character relationships in the movie were reshaped for suspense and cinematic impact.
