In the United States, which California city hosts the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day?

The story behind the answer

Pasadena, California, hosts the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day.

The parade is formally known as the Rose Parade and is organized by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. It traditionally takes place on January 1, except when January 1 falls on a Sunday; in that case, the parade moves to Monday, January 2. Its route follows Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena and features elaborate floral floats, marching bands, and equestrian units.

The event began in 1890 as a promotional celebration for Southern California's mild winter climate. Members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club decorated carriages with flowers and invited visitors to enjoy outdoor attractions while much of the United States was experiencing winter weather. The Tournament of Roses football game was added later, in 1902, and became an important companion event.

The parade is associated with New Year's celebrations but is not a midnight countdown. Pasadena is part of the greater Los Angeles area, which sometimes causes people to answer Los Angeles, but the parade's official host city is Pasadena.
