In the United Kingdom, on which Sunday is Father’s Day traditionally celebrated?

The story behind the answer

In the United Kingdom, Father’s Day is traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

The British observance follows the date used in the United States and many other countries. Because it is defined by a weekday position rather than a fixed calendar date, the day changes each year but always falls between June 15 and June 21.

Father’s Day in Britain is generally associated with cards, gifts, family meals and activities involving fathers or father figures. It is not a statutory public holiday, so schools, offices and shops usually operate normally.

The British date is sometimes confused with Saint Joseph’s Day, observed on March 19 in several Catholic countries. Saint Joseph’s Day has a religious connection to fatherhood, whereas the modern British Father’s Day date belongs to the June observance popularised internationally.
