Rachel Elnaugh became the first woman to appear as a Dragon on the UK television series.
Elnaugh joined the original British Dragons' Den panel in the programme's first series. She was known for her business career and for founding Red Letter Days, a company selling experience gifts such as leisure activities and special outings.
Her presence was significant because the early panel had otherwise been presented as male investors. Later female Dragons, including Deborah Meaden, Hilary Devey, Kelly Hoppen and Sara Davies, joined the programme in different series.
The wording matters: Elnaugh was the first woman to appear on the UK panel, not the first female entrepreneur to pitch on the show. Contestants and investors have distinct roles, and the programme has featured many women entrepreneurs from its beginning.
