In 'The Time Machine', what is the name of the species that lives above ground?

The story behind the answer

In H. G. Wells’s *The Time Machine*, the species that lives above ground is the Eloi.

The Eloi inhabit the Earth’s surface in the far future, while the Morlocks live underground. The Time Traveller encounters the Eloi in the year AD 802,701, where they appear small, graceful, carefree, and childlike. They live among decaying remnants of former civilization, eat mainly fruit, and have little curiosity or practical knowledge.

The apparent paradise of the Eloi is misleading. The Time Traveller gradually discovers that the Morlocks operate the machinery beneath the surface and provide much of the Eloi’s clothing and material comfort. The Morlocks also prey upon the Eloi, turning the relationship between the two species into a grim reversal of class dependence.

Wells presents the Eloi and Morlocks as possible descendants of Victorian society’s separated social classes. The Eloi represent an idle, privileged upper class that has lost resilience through effortless living; the Morlocks represent an exploited industrial workforce transformed by underground labor. Weena is an Eloi whom the Time Traveller rescues, but she is a character, not the name of the species.
