In 'The Time Machine', what is the name of the main character?

The story behind the answer

In H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine, the main character is the Time Traveller. The original 1895 novella never gives him a personal name; he is identified by his role as the inventor and operator of the time machine.

The Time Traveller presents his theory of time as a fourth dimension to guests gathered at his Victorian home. He later travels to the year 802,701, where humanity has divided into the gentle Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks. His journey becomes both an adventure and a warning about social inequality, technological change, and the possible future of human evolution.

Readers sometimes answer H. G. Wells, Doctor, or Alexander because those names appear in adaptations or related versions. The 1960 film gives the character the name George, while the 2002 film calls him Alexander Hartdegen. In Wells’s original text, however, “The Time Traveller” is the canonical designation.
