In The Princess Bride, the six-fingered man who killed Inigo Montoya’s father is Count Rugen.
Count Rugen is the six-fingered nobleman whose identity drives Inigo Montoya’s lifelong quest for revenge. Inigo remembers the unusual hand because he saw it when Rugen murdered his father, the sword maker Domingo Montoya. The distinctive physical clue eventually allows Inigo to recognize his enemy.
Count Rugen is also known as the six-fingered man throughout much of the story. He serves Prince Humperdinck and conducts experiments in the Pit of Despair. This creates another possible confusion: Humperdinck is the prince who commands Rugen, but he is not the man who killed Inigo’s father.
The film was released in 1987 and directed by Rob Reiner. William Goldman wrote the screenplay from his own 1973 novel. Mandy Patinkin played Inigo, while Christopher Guest played Count Rugen, making their eventual confrontation one of the movie’s best-known revenge scenes.
