In the Pokémon anime, what is the name of the female protagonist who travels with Ash in the Hoenn region? May is the female protagonist who travels with Ash in the Hoenn region. She joins Ash after he arrives in Hoenn and travels with him, Brock, and her younger brother Max during Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire and its follow-up story arcs.
May is the daughter of Norman, the Gym Leader of Petalburg City, and begins her journey with a Torchic. Unlike Ash, whose main goal is to compete in Pokémon Leagues, May becomes interested in Pokémon Contests. These competitions judge a Pokémon’s moves and appeal, and May eventually develops into a serious Coordinator who competes in both Hoenn and Kanto.
Viewers sometimes confuse May with Misty or Dawn because all three are prominent female companions of Ash. Misty travels with Ash primarily in the original Kanto and Johto-era stories, while Dawn accompanies him in Sinnoh. May’s Hoenn-era traveling group also includes Max, her younger brother, who is a Pokémon enthusiast but is too young to receive a starter Pokémon.
