In the parking lot in the movie "Fargo", where does Carl get shot?

The story behind the answer

In the parking lot in “Fargo,” Carl gets shot in the cheek.

The shooting occurs after Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud abduct Jerry Lundegaard’s wife and attempt to collect the ransom. In a parking lot outside a motel, Carl meets Jerry’s father-in-law, Wade Gustafson, to receive the money. Wade refuses to hand it over calmly, and the confrontation quickly turns violent.

Wade shoots Carl in the face, with the bullet striking his cheek and seriously injuring him. Carl then shoots Wade in the chest and takes the ransom briefcase. The wound leaves Carl talking through severe pain for much of the rest of the film, creating one of the movie’s bleakly comic moments.

The answer is sometimes loosely given as “the face” or “the jaw,” but “the cheek” is the specific location expected by the question. Carl’s injury also explains why he later struggles to speak while trying to hide the crime and divide the money with Gaear.
