In the original Assassin’s Creed, which Assassin is the player’s protagonist?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad is the player character in the original Assassin’s Creed.

The game follows Altaïr, a Syrian Assassin operating during the Third Crusade in the late 12th century. After he breaks the Brotherhood’s rules during a mission, his mentor Al Mualim strips him of rank and sends him on a sequence of investigations and assassinations.

Altaïr’s targets include important figures connected to both the Templars and the political conflicts of the Holy Land. The game’s principal historical cities are Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus, while Masyaf serves as the Assassin headquarters.

Altaïr is sometimes confused with Ezio Auditore, who became the central hero of the next major game, Assassin’s Creed II. Altaïr also appears in later series lore, but his first and defining playable role is in the 2007 original.
