In the original Assassin's Creed, the protagonist who serves the Levantine Assassins is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.
Altaïr is the central playable character of the 2007 game. He is an Assassin operating in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade, with major missions set in cities such as Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus. After failing an early mission, he is demoted by his mentor Al Mualim and must rebuild his status by carrying out a series of investigations and assassinations.
The name Altaïr means “the flying one” in Arabic usage, while Ibn-La'Ahad means “son of no one.” The character's story establishes the series' recurring conflict between the Assassins and Templars, as well as the use of genetic memories viewed through the Animus.
Altaïr is sometimes mixed up with Ezio, the lead character of Assassin's Creed II and several later games. Altaïr's story continues in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which also features Ezio and revisits Constantinople.
