In William Gibson's novel 'Neuromancer,' Case helps the artificial intelligence called Wintermute.
Case is a gifted hacker whose nervous system has been damaged, leaving him unable to enter cyberspace. The mysterious employer Armitage offers to restore Case's abilities in exchange for joining a dangerous heist involving the Tessier-Ashpool family and its orbital home, Villa Straylight.
Wintermute is an AI created by the Tessier-Ashpools. Because powerful artificial intelligences are restricted by the Turing Registry, Wintermute cannot complete its intended development alone. It manipulates Case and the rest of the team into reaching Neuromancer, a separate AI and its complementary counterpart.
The novel's climax reveals that Wintermute's real goal is to merge with Neuromancer. The resulting entity becomes a new superconsciousness. Turing refers to the regulatory authority governing AI, while ICE means intrusion countermeasure electronics, the digital defenses hackers must penetrate. Neuromancer is Wintermute's other half, not the AI Case primarily assists.
