In the novel 'Battle Royale', what is the name of the protagonist?

The story behind the answer

In Koushun Takami’s novel Battle Royale, the protagonist is Shuya Nanahara.

Shuya is an orphan and a student from Shiroiwa Junior High School who is forced to participate in the Program, a government-run contest in which classmates must kill one another on an isolated island. His father was killed for opposing the regime, and Shuya’s mother died when he was young, leaving him to grow up in an orphanage.

Rather than accept the Program’s rules, Shuya tries to protect his classmates and find a way to escape. After his best friend Yoshitoki Kuninobu is killed, Shuya vows to protect Kuninobu’s crush, Noriko Nakagawa. Shogo Kawada becomes another important ally, while Kazuo Kiriyama is one of the most dangerous participants. Noriko is a central companion, but she is not the protagonist.

Battle Royale was first published in Japan in 1999 and later adapted into a manga and a controversial 2000 film. Details vary among the novel, manga, and film, but Shuya Nanahara remains the central protagonist of the original novel and the canonical answer.
