In the myth of Pandora, what did Prometheus steal from Mount Olympus for humanity?

The story behind the answer

In the myth of Pandora, Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus for humanity.

Prometheus’s theft of fire is the event that leads directly to Zeus’s punishment in Hesiod’s account. Fire represents a powerful advantage for humans, enabling warmth, cooking, crafts, and technological development. Zeus treats its transfer from the gods to humanity as a serious challenge to divine authority.

As a response, Zeus has Pandora created and sends her to Epimetheus. The story therefore links two famous mythic themes: the gift of fire and the release of suffering. Prometheus is punished separately, traditionally by being chained to a rock while an eagle eats his liver, which regenerates.

Fire is sometimes confused with lightning because Zeus is strongly associated with the thunderbolt. In this myth, however, Prometheus steals fire, not Zeus’s lightning weapon. The Golden Fleece belongs to the later Argonaut story, and ambrosia is divine food rather than the stolen gift described here.
