In the movie "Twilight", what flu strain caused Edward Cullen's death?
Answer
Spanish Influenza
Answer
Spanish Influenza
In Twilight, Edward Cullen was dying from Spanish influenza when Carlisle Cullen transformed him into a vampire. The illness struck Edward in Chicago during the 1918 influenza pandemic.
Edward was born Edward Anthony Masen Jr. on June 20, 1901, making him 17 when he became a vampire in 1918. His parents also contracted the disease, and Edward was near death in a hospital. His mother, Elizabeth Masen, pleaded with Carlisle—a doctor secretly living as a vampire—to save her son. Carlisle responded by changing Edward before the illness could kill him.
The Spanish influenza, also called the 1918 flu pandemic, was caused by an H1N1 strain of influenza A. Despite its common name, the pandemic did not originate in Spain; Spain’s wartime neutrality allowed its newspapers to report the outbreak more openly than many countries involved in World War I.
Edward’s transformation explains why he remains physically 17 throughout the series. He is not simply an unusually old human: his human death was interrupted by Carlisle’s vampire venom and supernatural transformation.
