In The Page Turner, Deborah François’s character sought revenge by taking a job as a nanny. The film follows Mélanie, a gifted young pianist whose audition is disastrously disrupted by an inattentive celebrity judge, Ariane Fouchécourt. Years later, Mélanie deliberately enters the judge’s household by working as a nanny.
The job gives Mélanie access to the family and allows her to build trust while quietly pursuing her long-held plan. Her revenge is psychological rather than openly violent: she studies the family’s weaknesses, inserts herself into their private life, and manipulates the environment around Ariane’s return to performance. The film’s suspense comes from the gap between Mélanie’s calm outward manner and her concealed purpose.
François plays the adult Mélanie, while Catherine Frot portrays Ariane. The French film, originally titled La Tourneuse de pages, was directed by Denis Dercourt and released in 2006. “Page turner” refers to the musician who turns sheet music for a performer, an apparently minor role that becomes central to the film’s themes of control, attention, and revenge.
