In The Matrix, what is the name of the city where the real world humans live?

The story behind the answer

In The Matrix, the city where humans live in the real world is Zion.

Zion is a vast underground city built in caverns near Earth’s core. It shelters humans who have rejected or escaped the Matrix, the simulated reality created by intelligent machines. The city provides warmth, power, and protection on a planet devastated by the war between humanity and the machines.

Zion is also the center of human resistance. Its defenses include hovercraft fleets, infantry forces, and soldiers using powered battle suits. Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, and other resistance members operate from or return to Zion as they seek a way to free humanity and end machine domination.

The sequels add a major complication: Zion is not entirely outside the machines’ control. In The Matrix Reloaded, the Architect reveals that the machines have repeatedly destroyed and permitted Zion’s rebuilding as part of a cycle designed to manage human choice. The city’s name also echoes the biblical Zion, traditionally associated with Jerusalem and a promised refuge.
