In the Mahabharata, how many books, or parvas, make up the epic?

The story behind the answer

The Mahabharata consists of 18 books, traditionally called parvas.

These parvas cover the epic’s genealogy, the rivalry between the Kauravas and Pandavas, the Kurukshetra War, and the aftermath of the conflict. Their lengths vary greatly: the first book introduces the ancestry and early lives of the main characters, while later books narrate the war and its consequences.

The number 18 also appears repeatedly within the epic’s traditional structure. The Kurukshetra War lasts 18 days, the opposing armies are described as 18 akshauhinis in total, and the Bhagavad Gita has 18 chapters. These recurring patterns are symbolic as well as organizational.

The Mahabharata is sometimes described as one enormous continuous poem rather than a modern novel. Its sections include philosophical, legal, devotional, and narrative material, so translations and editions can differ in arrangement while retaining the traditional 18-parva framework.
