In the Hindu legend of Savitri and Satyavan, what was the name of Savitri’s husband?

The story behind the answer

In the Hindu legend of Savitri and Satyavan, Savitri’s husband is named Satyavan.

Savitri chooses Satyavan as her husband even after being warned that he is destined to die one year after their marriage. Satyavan is the son of the blind and exiled king Dyumatsena. The couple lives in the forest, where Satyavan supports his parents and carries out a simple life away from royal power.

When the predicted day arrives, Satyavan dies while working in the forest. Savitri follows Yama, the god of death, who comes to take Satyavan’s life. Through her intelligence, devotion, and carefully chosen requests, she obtains boons that ultimately make Satyavan’s restoration possible.

The story is especially associated with marital devotion and the festival of Vat Savitri, observed by many Hindu women in parts of India. Satyavan is sometimes confused with other legendary figures who return from death, but he is specifically the husband in Savitri’s story.
