In the Mahabharata, what city did the Pandavas establish as their capital?

The story behind the answer

In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas established Indraprastha as their capital.

Indraprastha was built on the site known as Khandavaprastha after the Pandavas received the territory from the Kuru ruler. With Krishna’s assistance, Arjuna and Krishna are associated with the burning of the Khandava forest, after which the architect Maya constructs the celebrated assembly hall. The transformed settlement becomes a powerful and prosperous capital under Yudhishthira.

The city’s Maya Sabha is central to the story of the Pandavas’ rise. Its extraordinary architecture contributes to Duryodhana’s humiliation and resentment, helping intensify the rivalry that leads to the dice game and eventually the Kurukshetra War. Indraprastha is distinct from Hastinapura, the older Kuru capital where the royal court and Kaurava princes lived. Later historical tradition often identifies Indraprastha with an area in present-day Delhi, but the archaeological and literary identification remains a matter of scholarly discussion rather than a simple proven equivalence.
