In "The Lord of the Rings", what two colors is the wizard Gandalf eventually known?

In “The Lord of the Rings,” Gandalf is eventually known as Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White.

He begins the story as Gandalf the Grey, a travelling wizard whose grey clothing gives him titles such as the Grey Pilgrim and Mithrandir, a Sindarin name meaning “Grey Wanderer” or “Grey Pilgrim.” He is one of the Istari, powerful spiritual beings sent to Middle-earth to oppose Sauron.

Gandalf’s transformation happens after his battle with the Balrog in Moria. Although he defeats the Balrog, he dies from his wounds and later returns as Gandalf the White. His new white clothing and changed authority signify that he has replaced Saruman as the chief of the Wizards. Galadriel helps heal and re-clothe him in Lothlórien.

A common mix-up is confusing Gandalf’s colors with those of other Wizards: Saruman is originally the White, Radagast is the Brown, and two other Istari are associated with blue. Gandalf’s color change is therefore both a visual transformation and a major change in his role within the struggle against Sauron.
