In The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Link’s school friend and rival is named Groose.
Groose is a student at the Knight Academy in Skyloft, where Link and Zelda also live. At the start of the game, he is a boastful classmate who competes with Link and considers himself Zelda’s romantic rival. He tries to interfere with Link’s final exam, but Link ultimately passes and wins the Loftwing ceremony.
Although Groose begins as an antagonist and bully, his role changes after Zelda disappears beneath the clouds. He follows Link to the surface and gradually becomes a dependable ally. He helps defend the Sealed Temple and later uses his invention, the Groosenator, to fight the Imprisoned.
Groose is not the same character as Zelda, Impa, or Hylia. Zelda is Link’s childhood friend, Impa is Zelda’s protector, and Hylia is the goddess connected to the game’s ancient history. Groose’s transformation from insecure rival to courageous friend is one of Skyward Sword’s major character arcs.
